C3M is upgrading the existing traction power cable system that feeds WMATA’s Orange and Blue Lines by replacing positive and negative cables, horizontal support cable trays, and negative switchboards. The cables will be routed from the substation at grade, down a 60-foot vertical shaft, and through utility tunnels that lead to the mainline tracks. The new system will allow WMATA to meet requirements for the Eight-Car Train Program and State of Good Repair Program by providing additional power capacity and resolving outstanding operational and safety concerns. Most of the work will be performed during a ten-week period under a demanding 24/7 schedule.
